London's Ultra Low Emission Zone: How will you be affected?

As you may have heard, the Mayor of London will be introducing an Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) on the 8th April 2019 in designated areas of London. The change is designed to help combat and significantly reduce emissions to improve our air pollution, and to help make the air we breathe, clean.

Just by being a part of Getaround as an Owner or Driver, is a huge step taken to improve our cities. Car sharing makes cities less congested, less polluted, and more liveable. In one word: better.

When and where?

The change will first operate in the current Congestion Charging Zone (CCZ), and will expand on the 25th October 2021 to Inner London, defined by the North and South Circular roads.

Cars that do not meet the ULEZ standards will be charged £12.50 for everyday you drive within the zone, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week (including public holidays). This charge is an additional fee on top of the congestion charge you are required to pay if you drive within the CCZ Monday - Friday, 6am - 7pm.

Why do we need ULEZ?

Londoners are in danger of damaging their health. The levels of pollution in the air are so high that it has now become one of Londons most significant concerns. Measures have now been put in place to encourage those travelling in central London to walk and cycle, but despite efforts to remove cars in the capital, the need still remains. The ULEZ is designed to reduce the amount of cars driving within this zone, to make it a healthier and safer place to live, work and visit.

Is my car compliant with the ULEZ standards?

Broadly speaking, petrol cars younger than 2006 and diesel cars younger than 2015 won’t be affected. However, we do recommend that all our car owners check to see whether this change will affect them. https://tfl.gov.uk/modes/driving/ultra-low-emission-zone/check-your-vehicle

What is Getaround doing to help?

If your car does not comply with the ULEZ standards, we will update your listing to keep Drivers informed about the potential charges they’ll incur.

We are in full support of the Ultra Low Emission Zone and want to help our current owners transition to owning ‘cleaner’ vehicles.

We’ll be waiving our Getaround service fees for a year for any existing or new Getaround owners who scrap their non-compliant vehicles in exchange for a ‘cleaner’ model. Whether that’s electric or Hybrid, before 8th April 2019.

Whatever the difference, big or small, we hope our commitment can make a change and improve the air we breathe.
